Following the Superbowl performance of Lady Gaga, I was surprised by the number of Catholics who went to their Facebook and Twitter accounts in order to praise Lady Gaga for not being completely raunchy and pornographic, or for perhaps, at least not splattering herself with blood at she did at the 2009 MTV Video Awards. Expectations are low in America. Many commentators were also relieved that she kept some of her clothes on.

While I didn’t watch the game, I did find the Halftime Show on YouTube – I think America is numb to porn and “gay” propaganda. I won’t get into “Bad Romance” and its reference to anal sex – although she appeared to skip that line in this performance – but “Born this Way” is a major homage to the born “gay” theory: “No matter gay – straight – or bi – lesbian – transgender life – I am on the right track.” No other recent song, except Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” has done as much damage.

What led my generation to New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, and into the AIDS infected bathhouses was The Village People’s “YMCA;” it happened again with Madonna in “Express Yourself.” Later, another siren song of the late 1970s “gay” disco era was brought back from the grave when The Pet Shop Boys famously remade “Go West” from “The Village People,” thus encouraging a whole new band of lost boys to make the trek towards the end of the rainbow and the mythical city on a hill. When I outreach in San Francisco, I have witness how all of these songs mash-up at “gay” Pride and they induce a sort of mass catatonia – I am reminded of the Eloi in the classic Sci-Fi film “The Time Machine” who freeze and precede to their deaths once the sirens go off. This weird form of brain-washed group theater was reflected in the Gaga show by the lock-stepping of the background dancers and the flash-mob mimicry exhibited by the crowd directly in front of the stage. Therefore, for those confused lost souls who are looking for an answer, as a notoriously gay-affirmative New York City Catholic gay-outreach heralded, Lady Gaga appears as if: “a heavenly angel descended upon us in this our time of darkness.”

A spiritual mentor of sorts for Lady Gaga is Archdiocese of New York priest John Duffell (pictured below with Gaga.) Formerly assigned to the Church of the Ascension, which is currently home to an active gay-affirmative ministry, he is now Pastor at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament that hosts its own regular “Gay Fellowship” meetings; the contact person is John Gasdaska.

From a 2008 article about Duffell for The New York Times:

The informational fliers for the church proclaim, “No matter your age, your race, your gender or your sexual orientation, there is a place for you at Ascension.” In his speeches each week, Father Duffell expresses the same sentiment, each time mentioning sexual orientation. The message is not lost on the parishioners, gay or straight.

“Regardless of the issue of homosexuality, I’ve always been a practicing Catholic — I took what I wanted and left the rest, so to speak,” said John Gasdaska, a 43-year-old real estate agent who has attended Ascension since he moved to the neighborhood with his partner in 2000.

Recently, the Parish Bulletin at Blessed Sacrament advertised a performance of “Full of Grace: Journeys of LGBT Catholics” at the Church of the Ascension as well as a talk by Fr. Michael Holleran on Amoris Laetitia; in 2014, Holleran said: “…men hate church and spirituality because they have to sit still and they have to be receptive. There is nothing more threatening to a male than being receptive. I mean, think about it sexually – maybe that’s why gay men are more ready for it.”

In 2011, Duffel participated in “More Than a Monologue” conference series on “Sexual Diversity and the Catholic Church” at Fordham University. When asked by a young “gay” man if he should be cautious or fearful about entering a seminary as an openly “gay” man, Duffel responded: “You’re not broken. The system is broken. And therefore you deal with it as a broken system: You lie.”
